elliott, poached, and cathy
9:31 AMOver the past few weeks, Stephen has been converting the boys pirate ship into a chicken coop! A kind of a photo of the pirate ship can be seen here. Stephen's progress can be seen below.

With the chicken coop finally complete, we headed to Caldwell this morning and picked up three hens at Dunlap Hatchery!

Henry's is a Barred Plymouth Rock called Elliott. Wyatt's is a Buff Oprington called Poached and Stephen's is an Araucanas. He named her Cathy because she's the only one that has made any noise so far. The boys are fascinated by them. They've practically spent all day watching them. We don't think they'd seen the light of day before this morning and they seem quite happy in their new coop.

So happy in fact, that one of them (I think it was Cathy 'cuz she's so bold, Stephen thinks it was Poached because she was sitting down) laid an egg while we were out this afternoon. An egg. We already have an egg!

Wonderful fun! Do you live in city limits? I have always wanted to do this.
ReplyDeleteJudging by the color I would say it was Cathy too. Your Orpington and Barred rock will lay eggs in varied shades of brown. Araucanas aka easter eggers can lay any color, mine lay pink and blue. Congrats on the hens. Check out backyardchickens.com for lots of helpful hints, tips and chicken friends. Oh and try putting some golf balls or fake eggs in the nest box to encourage them to lay there.
ReplyDeleteWe do live in city limits but Boise City allows us to have a maximum of three hens! You guys should totally do it. We already have five eggs in just two days! Plus, they're fun to watch bumble around--they're really dumb.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the golf ball tip. We weren't quite sure how to teach them to lay in the nesting boxes.
