another bunk bed catastrophe

12:43 PM

Let me preface this story with two other quick stories. And also let me preface those stories with this: I love Stephen but I am about to throw him under the bus (and evade all accountability).

Two or three years ago we replaced all the windows in our home, except for two. Two windows that Stephen thought captured the essence of our home and where true to the original structure. Judging by hodge podge of materials and craftsmanship we discover each time we embark on a home improvement project, nothing is true to the original structure of the house—but who was I to argue?

One of those original windows is in the boys’ room. So in August, when we bought the bunk bed, I asked Stephen if he was concerned about having the top bunk in front of the old window. Could the boys break the window? No, it would take a lot of force to break the window. Don’t worry so much, Hannah.

I don’t know why I didn’t listen to the tiny voice inside my head telling me to beware of the window, but I didn’t. And I should have because once again, left alone in their room, those boys messed some shit up!
The boys were resting, Stephen was cleaning the fishbowl, I was about to work on some crafty crap, and then I heard a crackle. I thought maybe it was the fireplace settling down, but the fire had long been extinguished. I looked at the closed bedroom door, which had been muffling lots of laughter, and then called out to the boys. I couldn’t quite make out what they were saying and I opened the door to find this:

Of course, it was Henry’s fault. Wyatt was just an innocent bystander who had been pushed into the window. (Later, I told Wyatt he needs to stop evading accountability for his actions and when Stephen asked him what that meant, he said it was about money—obviously big words don’t intimidate small children).

Regardless, there is a big sheet of wood in the window (and a small draft) for the time being. Stephen is calling about window quotes today, cause this window should have been included the first time around!

We both remained oddly calm about the whole situation but it was a pretty serious accident. There could have been injuries. We are not quite sure about our next move or what to do about the bunk bed.

And if the last 10 days are any indication of what I can expect for the next 15 plus years, I don’t think I am ready. Can I get a refund?
