nothing to do, nowhere to go

11:31 PM

I haven't had much to say since last Friday. However, I thought I'd better post something before you all starting thinking the worst.

I am wiped out. I invested a lot of time last week trying to change the appearance of my blog. I know, if you even noticed the changes at all, you noticed they were subtle. But I don't know what I am doing, so there is much trial and error that happens behind the scenes.

You may have also noticed that the titles of my posts don't align with the margin of the page anymore. This annoys me to no end! I spent multiple days and over five hours trying to fix this without any luck. However, click any of my other pages, like the about page, and the title is perfectly aligned with the margin. This is what did me in. I have been unable to recover and regain my stride. And I am a little bit mad at my blog. Why won't it cooperate?! Mo**er F**ker! So I guess I am a lot mad.

But speaking of cooperate...Henry and Wyatt have been learning about cooperation at school. They were asked to bring an example of cooperation to school this week. I called it a homework assignment and sat the boys down at the kitchen table on Tuesday night to crank it out--this is totally an aside, but homework time was just as I had always envisioned it would be. The boys sat at the table while I made dinner and we had a lively discussion about the topic at hand. It was a completely happy, fulfilling mom moment.

Henry instantly knew what his example of cooperation would be. A picture of him helping Stephen plant seeds in the garden. I should have snapped a photo. It was a very detailed drawing of my three boys planting seeds in the garden while I stood inside the house because, apparently, I don't ever help do anything. Little does Henry know that I probably did three loads of laundry, washed the breakfast dishes, scrubbed the toilets, balanced the checkbook, and picked up a few Legos all while just standing in the house!

Wyatt had a more difficult time coming up with an example. Henry and I both spoon fed him ideas: picking up toys with Henry, sharing toys with a friend, setting the table, listening to the teacher, wrangling the chickens. None of these examples pleased him. They were all too hard to draw and I wouldn't let Henry draw a picture for Wyatt, although it was suggested, more than once. I thought of a book, but he couldn't find it on the shelf and it was too hard to find another book. He finally found the book I had originally suggested, The Berenstain Bears and the Messy Room.

Because the book was my idea, I made sure Wyatt knew why it was an example of cooperation. He kind of knew why. Henry knew why and kept interrupting. I am hoping this is not a sign of things to come. One child resistant to put forth any effort and one child too eager to know all the answers. It could be. But it's probably not. I don't know. I try really hard not to pigeonhole their little personalities. They are only five, after all.

Plus, Wyatt totally redeemed himself at dinner when he recited the other principles they have been learning at school: open-mindedness, thinkers, caring, knowledgeable, communicator, and some more that I don't remember. He could also provide an example of each principle.

I think they are going to be okay. And I am looking forward to more picture perfect homework time to prove it!

  1. OH MY GOSH THE BERENSTEIN BEARS AND THE MESSY ROOM!! Have you ANY idea how obsessed I was with The Berenstein Bears and The Messy Room when I was a kid??? No, of course you don't, but my obsession lasted far longer than it probably should have.
