road fishing

8:07 AM

Stephen took the boys on their first father-son camping trip over the weekend. He was joined by our friend Josh and his son Benson. Part of camping with your dad is learning the meaning of "road fishing". It's a term Tom uses. I don't know if he coined the term or stole it from someone else. Either way, he's been saying it for as long as I can remember and it basically means the same as "what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas".

Jack and Dylan have all kinds of road fishing stories from trips with Tom. Of course, I probably know less than half of these stories and the ones I do know don't belong in writing. 'Cause that is how road fishing works. You don't tell your mom, you definitely don't put anything in writing, and you probably shouldn't take pictures...eh, Stephen.

Luckily for you and me, Henry and Wyatt don't yet grasp the idea of road fishing and Stephen did take pictures!

Hannah - How was your trip?
Henry - We ate hot dogs for breakfast!
Stephen - Yeah, we kind of ran out of food...

Hannah - Wyatt, is that food or an ouchie under your eye?
Wyatt - Henry poked me with his fire stick.
Stephen - Yeah, Josh made walking sticks that eventually became fire sticks...

Hannah - How did the boys do. Were they good listeners?
Stephen - Oh yeah! They were great. They checked in with me every time they went down to the river-
Hannah - They went down to the river by themselves...

Stephen also let them swim nakie in what sounds like the most disgusting hot spring ever. They found a dirty diaper, two used band aids, a pair of boxer shorts, and other miscellaneous trash surrounding the pool and they still got in!!! Gross!!!

But they also ate very well (before the food ran out), took naps, took hikes, played cards, watched the rain, built a rock bridge, lost a few fishhooks, explored the terrain, and had an all around excellent adventure. It sounds like the first of many successful father-son camping trips to come!

I know this is a little preemptive, but in honor of all fathers - particularly my own - Happy Father's Day! Have a lovely weekend and a lovely Sunday.
