summer reading list
12:44 PMPer the highly esteemed recommendations of my grandmother and younger cousin, I finally broke down and read The Hunger Games in May. And this marks my decent into young adult literature and erotic romance novels.
After finishing The Hunger Games I tried to reread East of Eden, finish A Movable Feast, and start something written by Katherine Mansfield - the title escapes me. I also picked up The Complete Poems of Diane Sexton. But alas, none of these works held my interest.
So in June, when my mom asked if I'd like to borrow Fifty Shades of Grey I jumped at the chance to read something mindless. And although I had originally intended not to participate in all the Fifty Shades madness, a recent conversation about anti-feminism and the trilogy had peaked my interest, being that I have a BA in women's studies and all.
I think my mom was more than surprised when I called just a few days later to request that she bring the second two novels with her to Boise the next week - and not to forget! And once I finished Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed, I was able to get my hands on the second and third books from the Hunger Games trilogy.
And once I finished Catching Fire and Mockingjay, I figured why not go for shit and I checked out Twilight from the local library. The day after I finished Twilight, I scored a copy of both New Moon and Eclipse for 5 bucks total at the Youth Ranch. I'll probably finish New Moon tonight.

I've taken some flack for my recent choices in literature. I've even been told these books don't actually count as literature. But I don't care - obviously! I've declared this my laziest summer ever and I've had many an enjoyable evening stretched out in the hammock doing nothing but reading. When was the last time you allowed yourself to do something so indulgent?
And just in case anyone is interested:
- In my educated opinion, Fifty Shades is not anti-feminist, although it is the shittiest writing I have ever read with the exception of the first three chapters of a former coworker's science fiction novel.
- I have a hard girl crush on Katness Everdeen and I am so glad she ended up with the boy I wanted for her.
- I am totally Team Jacob. Totally.

Interesting choices but thank you for being honest. So many of us read questionable literature but will never admit to it.
ReplyDeleteSo you are saying I should check out this Fifty Shades of Grey stuff?
Did you like the Hunger Games??? I just can't bring myself to read them. The premise of the story just seems so ridiculous.
I am more Team Jacob too. Didn't you find Stephanie Meyer's writing awful?
Fun post!
Oh yikes - a comment from a librarian!
DeleteLet's see, I'd very much loved the Hunger Games trilogy. And the story doesn't seem so ridiculous once you start. There's some bigger metaphors there - obviously.
You're on your own when it comes to Fifty Shades. They are terribly written books and I skimmed quite a bit, especially during the third book. I couldn't identify with either character. There's really only one reason to read them - the smut!
And Meyer's writing is awful, but more tolerable than Fifty Shades what's her name. And Bella! God that girl is pathetic. But go Jacob!
Well I am not an official librarian so don't let that stop you!
ReplyDeleteYou just might convince me to read the Hunger Games yet. I wonder if I will ruin it for myself if I watch the movie first. Sort of sacrilege in my world but what the hell right?
I am usually not a fan of teen lit because there's no sex and well Fifty Shades sounds like only sex. Now someone has to write a good novel with some dirty sex and a whole demographic of women might possibly be satisfied. :)
Bella is pathetic! What a self absorbed character!!!!
Thanks for posting and feel free to share your favorite reads in the future. Always love to hear about books from other peoples perspectives.
