one foot long dog
1:16 PMThe Western Idaho Fair took place last week. We loaded up the boys and headed over around 4:30 pm on the last day. It was genius. Hardly anyone was there. I think that will be our strategy from now on.
Every year I struggle with whether I should get a wristband for the rides. I love the rides. Stephen does not. He is not at all interested in running through the Fun House or zipping down the Super Slide - which are two of my favorite attractions. I might like the rides but I don't like being spun upside or thrown into the air. At any rate, and like every year, I opted not to purchase a wristband. But not because I didn't want to. The fair is just hella expensive!
However, we hooked the boys up with wristbands and they took off. Henry, in particular, was all about some of the more mature rides. Rides that whipped you around. Rides that Stephen and I were not willing to waste our small ration of tickets on. So we made Wyatt go with him, which proved to be a poor decision later in the evening.

We rode the largest Ferris Wheel, which scared the shit out of me. It goes up really, really high. And there are no seat belts or any sort of a cage to hold you in place. Not that either of those things would protect a small family of four should the Ferris Wheel bucket you are seated in come detached and plummet to the ground.

We spent a good deal of time eating quality fair fare. Henry and I had corn dogs - I wait all year for a corn dog from the fair. Wyatt had a super skinny gross looking foot long hot dog. And Stephen had a lamb sandwich - he's kind of a food snob. We all shared some cheesy fries and Stephen let the boys try cotton candy. Which, not surprisingly, because that shit is gross, they hated.
Because, in my opinion, the fair is a bit pricey, I pretty much forced the boys to go on the least babyish of the baby rides, like this frog thing, so that I felt our money was well spent. Although they were reluctant to hop on, they loved it - as their precious little faces show, proving once again that I am always right!

If you scroll back up to that first picture, you might notice that Wyatt is taller than Henry. This meant that we had to pass on a number of rides the whole family would have enjoyed such as the Bumper Cars. This also meant that Wyatt and I ended up riding some music themed ride that spun us around in circle, bobbed us up and down, and smashed us together against the outer side of the seat while Stephen and Henry watched from the sidelines. It was awesome. Although Wyatt did admit to feeling a bit queasy after it was over.

And then we headed over the swings wrap up our evening at the Western Idaho Fair. I didn't really want to ride the swings. They looked scary and unsafe and like a contraption that could easily come detached and plummet to the ground. But Wyatt was adamant that he did not want to ride the swings and in event of detachment and plummeting, I couldn't let Henry go it alone. At the last minute Wyatt decided to join us.

Wyatt sat behind me and as the ride began to slow and we were lowered to the ground, I turned around to see whether he had enjoyed the ride. He had not and he was panicked. And then he blew chunks! Millions and millions of tiny little foot long hot dog chunks as he cried and cried. And I was locked in my chair because the ride was still slowly moving. And the chunks just kept coming and coming. It was so sad...and a little bit funny because I've never actually seen someone vomit from motion sickness.
Stephen missed the entire disaster but he offered to buy the boys some ice cream on our way out. But we weren't on our way out! Oh no, the fair is expensive and we still had seven tickets left to use! Wyatt was going to have to suck it up! Which he did, but they don't let shirtless kids on the rides and Wyatt was no longer wearing a shirt. So he ate his ice cream while I accompanied Henry into the Fun House and down the Super Slide using all seven tickets.

And then it was finally time to go. Except that Wyatt had finished his ice cream and he was now feeling left out and disappointed. He wanted to ride the slide. So Henry gave Wyatt his shirt. But Wyatt didn't want to go alone. So Stephen bought three more tickets. And Stephen and Wyatt rode down the Super Slide, thus concluding our annual excursion to the county fair.
And all is well that ends well. Just look at those smiles.

Dang, that was a good one!
ReplyDeleteThank you!
ReplyDeleteLooks like fun. I had to laugh as I thought some of the same things you did when I went on some of the rides. I rode the ferris wheel too and had the fleeting thought that it would plummet to the ground. :) I am not a fan of rides and enjoyed the petting zoo the most. Good tip to visit the fair on the last day...will have to try it next year.
