bend it like beckham

You know, I've never actually seen that movie but I hear it's good. I also think Jack first realized his love for Keira Knightley after watching it.

Anyway, the boys just wrapped up their first season of soccer! They played six games and practiced twice a week for 45 minutes. Their school doesn't offer sports so we placed them in a league sponsored by the Boise YMCA. Luckily, seven other first and second graders from their school were also interested in playing soccer. Their team of 10 was rounded out by a friend of the boys who attends another school in town.

No that any of that matters. I just thought I'd share some details. And I guess I was pleased that the team was made up of children they go to school with rather than strangers, by which I mean new kids.

I was also pleased that the boys picked soccer as their first sport. Not that they had a choice. I actually picked soccer for them and Stephen agreed, so it became our plan. When they didn't object, it became their choice. And that's fantastic because here's the deal - I'm not a real sports enthusiast. I know. Your jaw just dropped open in disbelief.

The number of sporting events I am willing to watch is limited to soccer and baseball. That's it. I could possibly get into field hockey or lacrosse but I will draw the line there. This could pose a problem later in life because Stephen was captain of the high school swim team. However, I am fairly confident that I won't have to sit through many swim meets because as Henry mentioned to Stephen last night, I get my way a lot more than Dad. And ain't that the truth!

This photo below is my favorite. They look beat. They play 20 minutes halves and sub about every 10 minutes. That's a lot of running for my little strikers - mostly because they run in a huge pack rather than spreading out and working as a cohesive group! But that will come with time as will actually keeping score. That's right. There are no winners or losers in the first grade / second grade league. Just a lot of cute kids.

You can see that the boys have quite a cheering section! And please note the parent tunnel. The parent tunnel was new to me. I am not sure where the idea originated but it requires all parents to line up and create a tunnel for both teams to run through. And we all shout out words of encouragement and shit like that. I am happy to participate now but don't expect me to see joining hands with other parents at a junior high game. And they'd better be keeping score by then!

Following their last game, Stephen and I hosted an end- of-the-season potluck. It was a lovely afternoon so we left the french doors between the dining room and the deck open for about four hours. By the end of the evening our house was swarming with flies. Like hundreds of flies and they were all leaving those little fly poop speckles on everything in my entire house!

Seriously, I walked around with a rag and wiped walls, windows, mirrors, and furniture. You name it and it had fly shit on it. It was disgusting. The most disgusting thing I have ever seen. It was so bad that we had to buy fly strips the next morning, which Henry and Wyatt referred to as Venus Fly Traps. I counted over 100 dead (or nearly dead) flies on just one strip before I lost interest.

But the pictures are cool, right? Sticky dead flies and all. Although not nearly as cool as my boys on the soccer field!
