moon landing
11:39 PMWhile in Condo Town we made an impromptu visit to Craters of the Moon. It's a national monument and one of those things you just can't not visit if you live in Idaho. I went camping there once with Tom and Dana when I was four. Dylan was there, too. In my memory, he cried the whole time and I played with a Strawberry Shortcake doll. I also fell down and cut my knee. I still have the scar.
Stephen had been there more recently with Stephanie and Diana, although he can't remember if he was in junior high or high school at the time. So of course, he actually remembered specific things to see or do. He was just full of historical and scientific information!
It was hot and windy out there--the perfect combo! In these pictures I think we are looking at a splatter something and a snow cone. Stephen could tell you.

After that first look around I was hungry and you don't want to be around me when I am hungry. It's no bueno. When we couldn't find a picnic table, Stephen made an executive decision to just eat in the car. It was a good call. We'd stopped by the Big Belly Deli on our way out of town. They have killer sandwiches, like the best! Henry might disagree but he's only five, what does he know!?

Once everyone had finished eating, we headed toward the caves. It took awhile to get there. Wyatt, never one to complain, had to plop down on the path until Stephen was forced to give him the car keys so that he could get his water pack. He just couldn't do it anymore without some water. He also couldn't actually go to the car by himself either, so Wyatt and I back tracked while Stephen and Henry forged on.

We all eventually got there, together, and the boys were over the moon! They kept telling us what great climbers they were, how we didn't need to worry about them. Mom, stop trying to help me every time! I tried to stop--unsuccessfully. In my defense, there were big signs that read things like don't let your children fall in that gaping hole.

Doesn't it look like fun?
In conclusion, I'd like to leave you with this: astronauts may have practiced moon landings at Craters of the Moon; however, they may or may not have actually landed on the moon back in 1969--the jury is still out. Just an FYI.
