some thoughts on kindergarten
1:15 AMTo celebrate the first week of kindergarten, we took the boys to get ice cream after school. Of course, I was foolishly hoping to create a special moment where the boys would share and offer reflections on their kindergarten experience. Like I said, it was foolish. Given their lackadaisical attitude during the week, I should have known the ice cream trip would be no different.
When asked, the boys give very general comments about kindergarten. Henry likes learning but he can't say what he specifically likes about it. Wyatt thinks kindergarten boring, especially when they have to sit on the floor and listen to the teacher. He is very contrary these days and I don't believe him for a second. In fact, I am pretty sure that even if kindergarten is boring, they are still benefiting from going and enjoying it at the same time.
For example, Wyatt told me that there are three boys and three girls at his table. That includes him (his words exactly). When asked how many boys sit at his table not including him, he replied two boys. I'd call that some math right there.
Second example: Henry has been able to spell his name for at least a year. However, he has never been able to spell it correctly--until last week. He showed me his workbook for the week and instead of seeing H-E-R-N-Y across the top, I saw H-E-N-R-Y for the first time ever. I'm gonna go ahead and call that some spelling right there.
I couldn't be more proud.

I am hopeful they will also learn how to sense food on their faces by the end of the year.
