the story of us

7:15 AM

I often worry that I write more stories about Henry or that the stories I share focus more on what Henry said in comparison to what Wyatt said. Equal representation is something I have struggled with since I started blogging. Because this blog is a time line of their childhood and, for lack of a better word, a scrapbook of our lives, I want the boys to have a comparable, if not equal, number of stories recounting the silly things they said or did as youngsters.

So in an effort to over explain myself, I wanted to share why I think I tend to write more stories about Henry. Basically, it’s because while Henry is asking how things work or making some sort of astute observation, Wyatt is saying things like:

God is only a bad word if you say it right

or

Hi Mom, have fun pooping in the refrigerator

or

Switch rhymes with hitch…and bitch

Not that Henry doesn't say crazy, crass things or that Wyatt doesn't take an interest in the world around him. But Wyatt does spend more time living life and less time questioning everything he sees or experiences. He is content to flip on a light switch without needing to ask how the light switch works. I appreciate these things about Wyatt. I see myself in him. I usually don’t give shit about how things work or why. I just want them to work. And I have a potty mouth and a naughty sense of humor, which I pretty much censor when I write these blog posts.

Which also means I pretty much censor the funny things Wyatt says or does, because posting them would indicate that I tolerate that type of behavior. Which I do. Even more, I usually laugh and say something sassy back. I want Wyatt to be witty and sharp-tongued and a little bit of a rebel just as much as I want Henry to be inquisitive and thoughtful. I want them both to have all of those qualities.

So I guess what I am really trying to get across is that I no longer want to omit stories that might be offensive to others because this blog is my story, although I appreciate that people are curious enough to read my blog in the first place. But if this blog is my time capsule, it should be an accurate representation of our lives and who we are. Otherwise, I am altering the story of our lives, which is easy to do in this world of blogging.

But don’t worry. I am not about to start dropping f-bombs in every sentence or trash talking opposing points of view. But I might just tell you if Wyatt does--or Henry for that matter.
