spelling bee
6:37 AMHenry and Wyatt are learning to read. Henry is easily frustrated and often tells us how mean we are if we ask him to sound something out. When he doesn't recognize a word he'll just sit there quietly, waiting for someone to do the work for him.
Wyatt, on the other hand, diligently works his way through each new word and can actually hear words as he sounds them out. He seems to enjoy learning to read so much that he will pick up an Easy Reader book and practice by himself without any prompting from us.
And because he can recognize words and read, he can also spell. On Saturday night, he spelled D-A-D, B-A-T, B-A-D, and L-E-G-O. He also spelled this:

Yeah, you read that right. My five-year-old son wrote D-I-C-K with refrigerator magnets. He comes by it honestly. He's totally our kid.

I asked him where learned to spell dick thinking maybe he had come across a copy of See Dick Run at school or something. Nope. He just sounded it out. Da-ick. Dick.
