the lego party!

So the big Lego party came and went over the weekend! It's was lots of fun. I know there are a handful of people (grandmas) out there anxiously awaiting some photos, so here's the run down:

We bagged our originally planned pinata and instead, played two games and gave out prizes. Game Number One was "guess how many Legos are in the jar". At first we filled the jar with 106 Legos but they barely crowned the base of jar, so we opted to fill the jar with 666 Legos (because the boys turned 6, right). As our guests arrived, they stopped to make a guess. A few kids had a strategy for guessing, although 100 was by far the most common number submitted. Our youngest guest, a two-year-old, guessed 329 (all the numbers he can say) and won!

Game Number Two was Lego Bingo! It required some parental guidance. And we had a false win, which was a bit of a disappointment but all the kids seemed to enjoy playing, nonetheless.

The kids also cut out Lego masks, although no one wore them. And they ran around all crazy in the living room playing some sort of scary animal game, which involved jumping on my new sofa!

I shut that down after about 20 or 30 minutes and sent them all outside! Stephen let them each grab a Lego marshmallow head on their way out the door. In fact, we let them nibble on M&Ms and candy bricks all afternoon. We're cool like that.

While all kids ran around outside playing hide and seek,  the adults enjoyed a few moments of peace.

At some point we had cake. Stephen made four individual Lego brick cakes. They were pretty tasty.

We also opened presents. Now that Henry and Wyatt's friends can write, they received lots of precious handwritten cards with pictures. Like super precious.

And then we just played. The boys opened some of their new toys to share. As prizes, we gave away mini Lego sets. The lucky winners decided to build those with the other guests. There was also some castle building out of the Lego decorations. Other folks lounged on the big, cozy new sofa. I love that sofa.

We sent each guest home with a gift bag and a balloon. The gift bags were a first for us this year. We filled them with candy, Lego cars made by the boys, and Lego crayons!

Admittedly, this party was over the top for us as far as the decorations, the gift bags, and the prizes. We've never done anything this elaborate in the past and I don't think we'll do it again in the future, although the preparation that went into this party was immensely satisfying for me. I love planning parties and making our home look festive, as the pictures below demonstrate. So maybe I shouldn't rule it out. I guess we'll see what the Big Number Seven brings us next year!

For anyone who is interested, here are the details about the decorations and other party ideas.

  • You may have noticed that Henry and Wyatt were wearing Lego figure t-shirts. I made those! The Lego figure image was found at Over the Big Moon but I actually downloaded it from 4shared.com.
  • The idea for the mobiles come from Oh Happy Day but the directions can be found here at Project Wedding. I love those mobiles so much that I hung six of them in Henry and Wyatt's room after the party. Aren't they pretty?
  • I saw the Lego marshmallow heads here at Modern Moments Designs and came up with my own version, although Stephen actually assembled the heads. He also drilled 24 holes in a 1x4 to display them. He's a good dad.
  • The Lego masks that no one wore were downloaded from Lego.com
  • The gift bags were filled with M&Ms, candy bricks purchased from Powell's (a local candy store), Lego cars lovely made by Henry and Wyatt, and Lego crayons from LilCreativeCreations on Etsy. I have to give the owner of LilCreativeCreations a major shout out because she totally hooked me up! First, she accepted my order at a time when she wasn't taking new orders. Second, she let me place my order a mere nine days before I needed them, which is amazing because that means she had to make and ship the crayons super duper fast. So if you're ever in the market for some handmade Lego crayons, LilCreativeCreations comes highly recommended by me.
