a slice of americana
6:55 AMA few weekends ago we were in Twin Falls for a wedding. Our trip happened to coincide with our birthdays - Stephen on Friday and me on Saturday. We drove into Twin on Friday evening and after a lovely birthday dinner with Glenn and Stephanie, we took the boys to the drive-in!
I had been hatching this plan for weeks. I love the drive-in. Twin Falls just happens to have two drive-ins and I spent many a weekend night sitting in my pajamas eating junk food parked in front of the giant outdoor screen. So of course this was something I wanted to share with my boys!
I was concerned about arriving early enough to avoid the line and secure a parking space somewhere in the center of the lot. Stephen, on the other hand, was convinced we would one of a small group of drive-in enthusiasts. After a quick stop at the Stinker Station for cheap treats we pulled up to the Twin Falls Motor-Vu to find - you guessed it - a line of cars!! Told you so.

The first film doesn't start until dusk, which happened to be 9:45 on this particular Friday evening. The drive-in typically shows a family film first and then something more geared toward adults for the second film. The night we attended, the drive-in was screening Madagascar 3 and Men in Black 3, which I thought was fitting considering that Stephen and I were celebrating our 33 birthdays.
The second film didn't start until close to 11:45. Wyatt was asleep within minutes of the opening credits and Stephen suggested that we call it night. He was suffering from a small cold and was finding it difficult to breath. But I wouldn't relent. Henry was still awake and we were going to stay for the second film! And we did. We pulled into my parents driveway around 1:30am - and Henry was still awake! I think that might be the latest he's ever stayed up.

It was fun night. The boys say they'd do again. Only they want to take the Volvo or a truck because it was a little cramped in the back of the Subaru. Henry and I got pushed out during Men in Black and it was a bit chilly on the gravel, even with blankets and lawn chairs.
Did anyone notice that it was the anniversary of the drive-in (or something like that) just a few weeks ago? Apparently there are fewer than 400 drive-in theaters left in the states and two of them are in Twin Falls, Idaho! Lucky us!
